meet jb!
Hola! (again) Welcome to the About section. I'll be sharing more about myself and how I ventured into the creative field. I wasn’t always a creative at first. Before discovering this path, I had to explore various paths, bouncing from one course to another. I dreamed of becoming a firefighter, then a police officer, then an architect, which eventually led me to where I am now.
01
a filipino creative
John Benedict Rengel Mangco was born in March 2001 in Las Pinas, Philippines. Growing up, JB was rooted in Filipino culture, catholic traditions, and close to his family. He prefers to stay indoors, loves the game of basketball, and spends hours on the computer. Those who know him would say that he's an optimistic, driven, laidback, and a Heat fanatic. JB enjoys watching the NBA and movies, chatting with friends, playing the piano, biking, and constantly listening to music.
02
bedan culture
JB attended San Beda College Alabang from nursery through 12th grade, making it a significant part of his life, growth, and childhood. San Beda provided not only his academic foundation but also a supportive environment where he would meet some of my closest friends. During his time at San Beda, he participated in various school activities, like joining the arnis team and becoming an altar server.
03
underlying uncertainty
From Business Management to Social Humanities, JB had to bounce from course to course to discover where he would fit best, especially since college life was looming around the corner. He had hints of being a creative person before but never saw it as the basis for his career. He loved basketball, was talented in music, and at that time, becoming an architect was his dream career. Since he wasn’t the brightest in the class, he needed to contribute in some other way. So he opted to work on the presentations, posters, infographics, shirt designs, or any type of visuals instead. Little did he know that would be the starting point of his multimedia journey.
04
the mma
program
JB found himself admiring NBA designs and see if he can recreate them on PowerPoint where he would spend hours on the program having fun. He experimented with features like transitions and basic animations, but PowerPoint can only do so much. His mom eventually noticed this and suggested a program called Multimedia Arts, a creative and technical field that focuses on integrating different forms of media to convey messages through art. At first, it was simply an item on the list of possible courses to pursue, but after some reflection, he knew it was the best choice for him.
05
the spark
JB learned that this program focuses on creating arts and design, meaning there is less time for traditional subjects like Math and Science, making it the best track for him. He knew there was a high standard for this course, so to prepare himself for college, he first learned how to use Adobe Photoshop and spent countless hours learning the basics of the program. Thanks to YouTube channels like Piximperfect, PTC, and Tutvid, he was able to learn a bunch of technical knowledge. He then moved to Illustrator, then After Effects, Blender, XD, and FontForge. He explored different ways to create digital art, from illustrating, 3D modeling, and photo manipulation.
06
a new chapter
De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde was the top school in the country that offered the program. JB knew if there was a school that would allow him to tap his potential, it would be Benilde. He started his college journey as a batch 120, where he spent most of his time learning online because of the ongoing pandemic. Regardless, he preferred the online setup since it was more convenient.
07
benildean culture
JB learned more skills in Benilde like coding and 3D rigging. In the latter parts of his college journey, the school slowly transitioned to on-site learning, where he met amazing people and had the honor of becoming a Benildean scholar. He spent his internship at Qadra Studio, where he gained insight into the work of a designer. He graduated on July 2024 with honors.
